Helfire 5th at Brighton yesterday went there in good order. The weather was our only concern on arriving at the racecourse.... a heavy down pour mid morning dampened the watered areas, a good head wind and short showers on and off through the afternoon were not helping our cause.
We were in the last race and with times of previous races being quicker than suggested ground reports we had to take our chance.
In the race we broke well from the stalls, sat in a handy position and from 3 furlongs out she was travelling well but with nothing to give us a good lead we hit the front over 2 out. It looked like the race was ours but in a few strides as the winner joined us, we started getting unbalanced on the loose ground and with the strong head wind we tired at the furlong pole going into second and passing the line into 5th! So close but so far - beaten just 4 lengths. Hopefully we try again next Sunday at Salisbury.
Helfire in yellow/red cap in 2nd with just 1/2 a furlong to go!
