Midnight Jitterbug has been declared for Monday at Hereford over fences. A good sized field of 14. So pleased to be running after being balloted out over hurdles. You could say that this race on Monday is his debut over fences due to his first try where he over jumped the third (ditch), crumbled on landing and unshipped his jockey - race over! He has schooled on many occasions since and has been very pleasing, looking a natural. Midnight Jitterbug schooling with Danny Hiskett who rides him on Monday

Zefferino

Unlucky run from Zefferino at Lingfield being drawn wide and having to be held up last. He was a fast finishing 7th beaten 4 lengths, passing the winner a few strides after the finish line! Zefferino thinks he won!

Zefferino pre race at Lingfield

Jockeys have rules to abide by when leaving the stalls and if drawn wide you have a few options such as, break well from stalls and burst them to get a prominent position or sit out the back, settle them into a relaxed rhythm and get across to the inside rail. If you don’t burst them to get up the front you’ll end up very very wide and unable to tuck into the field of runners. In a flat race it’s about taking the shortest route using the least energy.

Zefferino had a reputation of being very keen in the early part of his races hence holding him up in the rear. This year he seems to be settling better with age and patience. To burst Zefferino from a wide stall would be suicidal and years of hard work undone of teaching him to settle in the early part of a race. Hold up horses sitting on the inside rail hope the horses come off the rail as the race unfolds and then ‘whip’ up the inside gaining ground near the front ranks but this doesn’t always work..... and it didn’t work last week!

Nawar who has been off the track since January also ran in the above race but he had a draw of 1 and different tactics to Zefferino. Nawar is a more relaxed horse and therefore able to sit in the first four from the stalls. He ran really well holding a handy position until he got tired 2f out and faded inside the final furlong.
